Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I like One of a Kind?
One of Kind accounts the amazing career and life of Gene Conley. Fitting 13 professional sport seasons into six short years, his life is a story waiting to be told. Facing triumphs, championships, injuries and tragedies, One of a Kind is Gene's great adventure, told by Kathryn Conley, who was along for the ride and knew him the best. Those who honor the human spirit and ability to make dreams come true will find great pleasure in One of a Kind.

I'm not Celtic or a Braves fan (or even a sports fan). Will I still like the book?
This is not your typical sports book. One of a Kind is about the life and times of a unique man, Gene Conley. Conley's adventures, mishaps and triumphs, take place on the diamond, on the court and off. Some of his most trying and remarkable moments take place in the decades after he put down the glove and unlaced his shoes.

Why is this book titled One of a Kind?
Bill James, AKA, The Sultan of Stats, in his book "The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract" puts Gene Conley in a list of his own, titled "One of a Kind." Gene Conley truly is "One of a Kind." He is the only man in professional sports history to play in and win world championships in both Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association.

What is Gene Conley doing now?
Gene and Kathryn spend time living in both New Hampshire and Florida. They together owned and operated the Foxboro Paper Company. Today you can find Gene on the ski slopes and the golf course. Still an avid sports fan, Gene is always rooting for his favorite teams.
